- Is belly fat keeping you up at night? A recent Mayo Clinic study shows there's a relationship between belly fat and poor quality of sleep in men. Sleep expert and senior author of the study Dr. Virend Somers says non-obese men with belly fat — or visceral fat — tend to sleep poorly. He adds this type of fat increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and other health issues.
