    Sherine Gabriel, M.D., Named Dean of Mayo Medical School

ROCHESTER, Minn. — October 31, 2012.   Sherine Gabriel, M.D., has been named dean of Mayo Medical School. She succeeds Terrence Cascino, M.D., who served as interim dean in 2012. Dr. Gabriel assumes her responsibilities Nov. 1 and will oversee undergraduate medical education activities on Mayo Medical School campuses.

Dr. Gabriel became a physician in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Rheumatology, and the Department of Health Sciences Research, Division of Epidemiology, in 1993. In 2000, she became a professor of medicine (rheumatology) and professor of epidemiology in the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic. In 2005, she was named the William J. and Charles H. Mayo Professor.

Dr. Gabriel has held many leadership positions, including chair, Department of Health Sciences Research; member, Executive Board; and medical director, Office for Strategic Alliances and Business Development. She has been co-principal investigator and director of education for the Mayo Clinic Center for Translational Science Activities since 2006 and has held full faculty privileges in Clinical and Translational Science in Mayo Graduate School since 2007. She is an educator, an established investigator and a prolific author. Dr. Gabriel is the recipient of several awards, including the Mayo Distinguished Educator Award.

Mayo Clinic educates medical and science professionals through five schools: Mayo Medical School, Mayo Graduate School, Mayo School of Health Sciences, Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education and Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development. Mayo Medical School was established in 1972 and has an enrollment of about 200 students. The school offers doctor of medicine (M.D.) degrees, joint M.D.–professional degrees, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery comprehensive residency (M.D.-O.M.S.) and the M.D.-Ph.D. program in partnership with Mayo Graduate School.
