Surgeon General Says Suicide Major Health Issue

About 100 people die every day by suicide and hundreds more think about or harm themselves — making suicide a significant public health issue.  This is one of the messages U.S.  Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, M.D., brought to the American Association of Suicidology annual conference in Baltimore this week.

Dr. Benjamin is leading a new national effort to inform the public so people can recognize easy-to-identify warning signs among family and friends, and offer more resources to those who are struggling.  She also says social media can be used as a prevention tool.  Dr. Benjamin spoke with Mayo Clinic's Nick Hanson, Public Affairs Specialist.

Four soundbites with Surgeon General Benjamin are available in the downloads above.
