Mayo Clinic has announced the launch of the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award — a college football award in partnership with the College Sports Information Directors of America, Associated Press and Fiesta Bowl. The award celebrates college football players who have incredible stories of overcoming illnesses, setbacks and life challenges.

The award highlights Mayo Clinic's commitment to helping people make remarkable recoveries and inspiring others to meet challenges in their own lives.

Ten times during the 2018 college football season, three inspiring student athletes from all levels of college football who have overcome injury, illness or other challenges will be recognized as nominees for the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award. At the end of the season, three players from the 30 nominees will be selected for the award.

An awards ceremony will be held at the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona in January. Mayo Clinic will award $5,000 in general scholarship funds for each of the three winners and $2,500 each for six other finalists.

Retired professional football player Chad Pennington is the ambassador for the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award. In this role, he will help promote the award and share the inspiring stories of the players being recognized. Pennington knows what it's like to come back, being the only player twice named the NFL's comeback player of the year, first in 2006 with the New York Jets and then in 2008 with the Miami Dolphins.
