- Listeria outbreaks around the nation have been in the news in recent weeks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths take place in the United States each year due to listeria infection. Mayo Clinic emergency department physician Dr. David Claypool tells us what we need to know about this food-borne illness, including the signs, symptoms and who is at risk.
