Pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined, according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

Pain from disease or injury can diminish quality of life — a toll that can be physical and mental.

In this previously aired Mayo Clinic Minute, Dr. Amit Sood, a Mayo Clinic resiliency expert, offers ideas for dealing with temporary and long-term pain. Jeff Olsen reports.

Dr. Sood is director of research in the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program on Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota campus. He also chairs the Mind-Body Medicine Initiative at Mayo Clinic. Follow @AmitSoodMD on Twitter.
