I have just been diaginosed with thyroid cancer after waiting four weeks to see the ENT who did the FNB. Everyone kept saying the same as you heard, this is most likely not cancer — and it was. Now the soonest I can get an appointment with the surgeon just to review the case is another four weeks. The surgery, they said, would be the soonest two months after that. Am I crazy to think that is way too long to have to wait? What is the hotline you mentioned? I will be calling them tomorrow to see what they think at the MAYO clinic. I really want to get this going sooner rather than three months from now!!

I saw four different physicians over 13 months about a lump under my arm. The first three doctors were confident that I did not have breast cancer. The attending radiologist at a major teaching hospital who read my mammogram 17 days before a biopsy said there was nothing on my screening that was even suspicious. February 19, 2010 I was diagnosed with stage 3 locally advanced breast cancer. It was left to me to discover that a diagnostic mammogram would have shown the tumor so clearly that a six year old could pick it out on the x-ray. Don’t be in my shoes. If you have a symptom, follow Carrie’s example and keep agitating for conclusive testing.

You are exactly right about the experience. Three years ago this week my husband had a similar experience with a different diagnosis that resulted in a pursuit to the Mayo in AZ. More medical institutions need to take a lesson in Mayo-care. There is a totally different mindset there – from the checkin process to billing, the internal communication systems and the business aspects are like no where we have experienced. Everyone is so compassionate yet they keep the process moving efficiently. We completely have faith in the doctors, but it goes far beyond the them. The nurses, techs, even volunteers breed confidence in the level of care. We could easily pack it in and move back to the Midwest, but we’re in AZ to stay simply because of his care.

I have also experienced their unsurpassed level of care. From the introductory encounter, (receptionists, et al), through the lab techs, and ultimately to the Doctors themselves. The care I received led me to pursue a career as a PA. I will carry the experience with me always!
