Run your fingers under any picnic table at a park or movie theater seat, and you might find a wad of gum. People have chewed some form of gum for thousands of years. And chewing gum has been popular since being marketed in the mid-1800s.

Yes, many find gum fun to chew, but in certain instances, gum may actually be good for your gut. That's according to Dr. Mark V. Larson, a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist.

“Gum is meant to be chewed,” says Dr. Larson.

Millions of people chew gum. Some say it helps to ease hunger, relieve stress or pass the time on a long drive. And …

“… it even has some positive medical effects, such as relieving bad breath,” says Dr. Larson.

Dr. Larson says chewing gum also may be a great tool for …

“… helping people recover more quickly after surgery.”

After certain operations, some people might get constipated.

“By chewing gum, you are stimulating certain reflexes that help drive activity within the intestinal system, for example, the colon and small bowel. So after colorectal surgery, people recover faster if they chew gum early in the recovery process. We encourage that for all patients who have had colon surgery.”

It turns out gum not only freshens breath, but also it may help keep your body’s plumbing system working.

Chewing gum can be a fun treat or a quick fix for bad breath. But, if swallowed, does it really get stuck in your stomach?

"Folklore would suggest that if you swallow gum, it stays in the stomach a really long time – up to seven years," says Dr. Mark V. Larson, a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist. “That simply is not true."

Watch: The Mayo Clinic Minute

Journalists: Broadcast-quality video pkg (0:58) is in the downloads. Read the script.

Dr. Larson says your body treats an occasional gob of gum like any other foreign object it can’t digest.

"It will travel through uneventfully and, generally, is excreted quite rapidly," he says.

Still, Dr. Larson warns anyone – especially young kids – against routinely swallowing wads of this sticky stuff.

"They could cause a bezoar effect, which is a medical term for a collection of material, such as gum, which could cause blockage symptoms," he explains. "And, in small children, it could lead to intestinal concerns."

Bezoars can cause lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, weight loss and a feeling of fullness after eating only a little food.

To be safe, when you’ve chewed through all the flavor and fun, put gum in the trash – not your tummy.

a close-up of an older man with his hand to his throat, looking very uncomfortable, perhaps feeling something is stuck in his throatDEAR MAYO CLINIC: My husband often doesn’t bother to put in his dentures when eating at home. Chunks of food get stuck in his throat from time to time. They eventually pass, but it’s still worrisome. Is this dangerous?

ANSWER: The condition you describe is called a food bolus impaction and is sometimes referred to as “steakhouse syndrome.” When harder or more solid foods, such as pieces of meat or harder pieces of vegetable, aren’t chewed sufficiently and are swallowed, they can get caught in one of the two tubes that run down the neck — the windpipe (trachea) or the food pipe (esophagus). It’s of immediate concern if the food piece is blocking the trachea, as it can lead to life-threatening choking.

If the food piece is lodged farther down the esophagus, it won’t interfere with breathing or talking. The person is usually well aware that food is stuck. It’s uncomfortable and can cause chest pain that feels like a heart attack. The person can’t swallow anything, including saliva, and may need a cup or towel to contain drooling.

A food bolus impaction can become unstuck without any intervention. However, it’s also not an uncommon reason for emergency department visits. A food bolus impaction lasting more than about 12 hours raises the risk of serious problems, such as perforation of the esophagus. An endoscope may need to be carefully inserted into the throat and then the esophagus to push the food along to the stomach, or grasp and pull the food out by way of the mouth.

Food bolus impaction is more common in older adults and in men. Having dentures is a risk factor, perhaps because it’s more difficult to chew with dentures than with natural teeth or anchored implants — or because dentures aren’t worn while eating. Alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of food impaction.

Dentures can start to fit poorly, which can lead to sores or difficulty eating, and may lead a person to avoid wearing them. If this is the case with your husband, have him make an appointment to see his dentist. All dentures need periodic adjustment by a dentist — and the occasional relining or replacement — to ensure a proper fit. This should make eating with dentures more comfortable for your husband, which could lessen the frequency in which he experiences a food bolus impaction. (adapted from Mayo Clinic Health Letter) — Dr. Mark Larson, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Foundation Health Partners and Mayo Clinic announced today that the Fairbanks-based health care system is the newest member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a network of like-minded organizations committed to serving their patients and enhancing the delivery of care through collaboration.

Foundation Health Partners is the first Mayo Clinic Care Network member in Alaska. The formal agreement promotes a close clinical relationship that focuses on sharing knowledge and expertise so that more patients can stay close to home for care, avoiding unnecessary travel and gaining additional peace of mind.

Foundation Health Partners operates Tanana Valley Clinic, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Denali Center in Fairbanks. As a member of the care network, Foundation Health Partners providers now can use a variety of Mayo Clinic resources to enhance their care of patients, including:

  • AskMayoExpert
Review Mayo-vetted information on care guidelines, treatment recommendations and medical reference information at the point of care.
  • eConsults
Consult electronically with Mayo Clinic specialists on patient care questions.
  • eBoards
Interact with a multidisciplinary panel of Mayo specialists and other network members via live video conference to discuss the management of complex cases.
  • Health Care Consulting
Gain access to Mayo Clinic’s practical experience and subject matter expertise for learning and meeting specific organizational objectives.

Foundation Health Partners’ staff also will have access to Mayo Clinic’s extensive library of patient education materials, professional development events and programs, and archived grand rounds of presentations by Mayo Clinic physicians and scientists.

“Our relationship with Mayo Clinic Care Network is based on our commitment to provide quality medical care,” says Greg Johnson D.D.S., CEO, Foundation Health Partners. “Having Mayo’s vast resources and expertise available to us through this relationship helps ensure our patients, physicians, nurses and staff have access to the highest level of medical knowledge available.”

“Foundation Health Partners is excited to have this relationship with Mayo Clinic,” says Jeff Cook, president, Foundation Health Partners.  “The advantage of being an independent health system is that we can seek out and collaborate with the best resources – such as this arrangement with Mayo – to provide enhanced patient care in Fairbanks and for interior Alaska.”

“As a community-owned and -operated organization, Foundation Health Partners puts patient need at the center of everything it does,” says Mark V. Larson M.D., medical director, Midwest region, Mayo Clinic Care Network. “This collaboration is an example of that commitment and responsiveness to its patients and community. We are pleased to welcome Foundation Health Partners into the care network.”

Foundation Health Partners remains independent but shares Mayo Clinic’s commitment to improve the quality and delivery of health care. Launched in 2011, the Mayo Clinic Care Network has more than 40 members across the U.S., and in Mexico, Philippines, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – May 19, 2016 – Beacon Health System and Mayo Clinic announced today that Beacon has joined the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a network of health care providers committed to serving patients and their families through collaboration.

Beacon is the first health care organization in Indiana to join the network. The formal agreement gives Beacon access to the latest Mayo Clinic knowledge and promotes collaboration among physicians to benefit patients. Through these shared resources, more patients can get answers to complex medical questions — and peace of mind —while staying close to home.

“We believe our patients in this community get great care; however, there are times when even the best physicians and nurses need additional resources and clinical expertise,” says Kreg Gruber, chief operating officer, Beacon Health System. “This collaboration with Mayo Clinic provides our local physician and clinical providers with world-class knowledge and support. We are excited to help bring this resource to northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.”

As a member of the network, Beacon will work with Mayo to share medical knowledge in ways that will enhance patient care. Network products and services include:

  • eConsults that enable Beacon physicians to connect electronically with Mayo specialists when they want additional input on a patient’s care
  • AskMayoExpert database that offers medical professionals point-of-care, Mayo-vetted information on disease management, care guidelines, treatment recommendations and reference materials for medical conditions
  • Health care consulting that enables Beacon to learn more about Mayo’s clinical, operational and business models, including their design and implementation
  • eTumor Board conferences that enable Beacon physicians to present and discuss management of complex cancer cases with a multidisciplinary panel of Mayo specialists and other network members

Beacon providers also have access to Mayo’s extensive library of patient education materials, and can view archived Mayo Clinic grand rounds presentations that feature Mayo physicians and scientists.

“We are pleased to welcome Beacon Health to the Mayo Clinic Care Network,” says Mark Larson M.D., medical director, Midwest region, Mayo Clinic Care Network. “As we’ve learned more about each other over the past year, it is clear that patient-centered care is at the heart of our collaboration. We look forward to working toward our shared goal of improving the delivery of health care for patients.”

Beacon Health was formed in 2011 by the merger of Memorial Hospital of South Bend and Elkhart General Hospital. Beacon Health is the largest locally owned and operated health care system in north central Indiana, with nearly 1,000 physicians and more than 6,000 team members and volunteers.

Beacon and other members of the Mayo Clinic Care Network remain independent, but share Mayo’s commitment to improve the quality and delivery of health care. Launched in 2011, the Mayo Clinic Care Network has more than 35 member organizations in the U.S., Mexico, Puerto Rico and Singapore.
