Sunburn: First aid
Did you know that you can get sunburned on cloudy days — not just when it's sunny? And, once sunburn occurs, you can't do much to limit damage to your skin. You may be able to reduce your pain and discomfort, though, with these self-care tips. And you need to know when to seek medical care. Learn more about first aid for sunburn.

Don't bring food poisoning to your cookout
You've got charcoal for the grill and condiments for the burgers, but there are a few other preparations you need to consider before your cookout. At what temperature should you cook meat? And how do you defrost foods safely? Food poisoning is caused by eating contaminated food. Contamination can occur if food is handled or cooked incorrectly. Here's how to make sure your cookout is safe and healthy.

EXPERT ANSWERS
What is chikungunya fever, and should I be worried?
Chikungunya (chik-un-GUN-yuh) is a viral illness transmitted by mosquitoes. It causes the sudden onset of fever and severe joint pain. Other signs and symptoms may include fatigue, muscle pain, headache and rash.  No vaccine exists to prevent chikungunya fever, and there's no effective antiviral treatment. Learn more from Dr. Scott Litin, a Mayo Clinic internal medicine specialist.

Which is better for weight loss cutting calories or increasing exercise?
The key to weight loss is to consume fewer calories than you burn. For most people, it's possible to lower calorie intake to a greater degree than it is to burn more calories through increased exercise. But exercise also is important because it can help you maintain your weight loss. Learn more from Dr. Donald Hensrud, a Mayo Clinic preventive medicine specialist and director of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program.

HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK
Don't let your tots burn
When you head outside for family fun, be sure to protect small children from burns. Keep sunblock handy and reapply often. Keep little ones away from grills, fire pits and campfires. Don't let children play with or near fireworks or sparklers. Check children's car seats for hot straps or buckles. These can heat up quickly in a car parked in direct sunlight.

Almost 1 out of every 3 people in the U.S. will develop shingles in their lifetime, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And the risk goes up with age. Shingles is the blistery rash that happens when the chickenpox virus is reactivated. While it isn't a life-threatening condition, shingles can be painful. Vaccines can reduce the risk of shingles, while early treatment can shorten a shingles infection and lessen the chance of complications.

On the next Mayo Clinic Radio program, Dr. Pritish Tosh, an infectious diseases specialist at Mayo Clinic, will discuss shingles and who should get vaccinated. Also on the program, Dr. John Volz, an orthodontist at Mayo Clinic, will explain treatment for cleft lip and cleft palate. And Dr. Scott Litin, an internal medicine specialist at Mayo Clinic, will share information about the latest edition of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book. Dr. Litin is the medical editor.

Mayo Clinic Family Health Book ROCHESTER, Minn. — Since its initial publication in 1990, the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book has become a classic home medical reference, selling more than 1.5 million copies. Now in its fifth edition – the first since 2009 – this revised and illustrated volume offers the latest in medical knowledge and strongly emphasizes self-care. The book will be published on May 29, 2018, and sells for $49.95.

The Mayo Clinic Family Health Book is based on the expertise of hundreds of Mayo Clinic health care providers and the advice they give their patients daily. From infancy to old age, from prevention to treatment, from standard practices to integrative medicine, the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book provides easy-to-understand information.

The book is based on the premise that knowledge gives people the tools to maintain good health. Although no book can replace the advice and care of a health care provider, the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book will help families better understand various symptoms, diseases, tests and treatments, so that they can communicate more effectively with their health care providers.

For ease of use, the information in the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book is organized into these sections:

  • Injuries and Symptoms
This section provides information on first aid and possible causes of your symptoms.
  • Pregnancy and Healthy Children
This section provides practical advice on pregnancy and tips for raising healthy children.
  • Staying Healthy as You Age
This section covers topics ranging from diet and fitness to exams and vaccinations.
  • Diseases and Disorders
This section provides detailed information on conditions that concern you most.
  • Tests and Treatment
This section is your guide to common medical procedures and therapies.

“It’s our hope that this fully updated fifth edition will serve not only as a reference during times of illness, but also as a guide to helping you and your family adopt healthy lifestyle practices,” says Scott Litin, M.D., medical editor, Mayo Clinic Family Health Book.

Sanjeev Nanda, M.D., is the associate medical editor.

Dr. Litin is available for interview upon request.
