'Mayo 150 years serving humanity' 150th Sesquicentennial Logo

 

The first bariatric surgery was performed 60 years ago. Mayo Clinic studies have shown it’s not only the most effective way to lose large amounts weight, but also one of the most effective solutions for obese people with type 2 diabetes. Beyond the operating room, however, it requires a total commitment from patients, both physically and mentally. Here is the personal story of one patient who shared her experience, in hopes of helping others who may be trying to decide if this life-altering procedure is right for them. [TRT 4:07]

In a Wall Street Journal article this week, reporter Ron Winslow wrote, "More than 200,000 Americans each year undergo a major operation called bariatric surgery to treat obesity. But doctors say millions more might opt for treatment if it were less invasive and more patient-friendly." Well, at Mayo Clinic more than a decade of research has produced a two-hour outpatient procedure that shrinks the stomach, with minimal side effects. Here’s Dennis Douda with more.  [TRT 1:27]

Marshall Curtis was diagnosed in 2009 with end stage liver failure and cirrhosis secondary to Alpha1 Antitrypsin deficiency. Obesity and encephalopathy were additional challenges confronting the Mayo team. He was recommended for a new study program combining a transplant and bariatric surgery to improve his chances for a transplant and long term survival.
