ROCHESTER, Minn. — Raising a child in the 21st century is a life-changing adventure with many unknowns but also plenty of rewards. A new Mayo Clinic book, Mayo Clinic Guide to Raising a Healthy Child, helps parents navigate many of the twists and turns of parenting by offering a trusted guide to raising children during the preschool and elementary school years.

cover of Mayo Clinic Guide to Raising a Healthy Child book

The book draws from the collective wisdom of Mayo Clinic pediatric experts, addressing key questions and concerns that many parents have. "Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to provide children with balanced, healthy life choices and to build a strong foundation that allows children to weather life's ups and downs," says Angela Mattke, M.D., a pediatrician at Mayo Clinic Children's Center and the book's editor.

It's no secret that parenting is rarely a straightforward path and can be challenging at times. This book offers encouragement and advice from leading child health care experts to help your family find success.

In Mayo Clinic Guide to Raising a Healthy Child, Mayo Clinic experts explain what it takes to prepare a child for a rich and meaningful adult life. Throughout the book, parents will find answers to family dilemmas such as feeding a picky eater, resolving sleep problems, addressing bullying, and treating common illnesses and injuries. The book also provides guidance and insight on more complex health care issues, including mental health concerns.

To make the information easy to use, the book is organized in six sections: Growth and Development, Health and Safety, Emotional Well-Being, Illness and Concerns, Special Circumstances and Issues in Raising a Child, and Tips and Suggestions to Ensure a Happy, Healthy Family Unit.

The book is available online and in retail outlets nationwide. Mayo Clinic's proceeds from the book will support medical education and research at Mayo Clinic.
