PHOENIX – To meet the increasing demand to treat patients with complex health conditions in the growing Southwest, Mayo Clinic announces a $648 million expansion that will nearly double the size of its Phoenix campus over five years.

The Arizona Forward Project will add 1.4 million square feet of building space (to the existing 1.7 million) with expanded clinical capacity, support services and infrastructure at the campus located near Loop 101 and 56th Street in North Phoenix.

The expansion plan increases the number of inpatient beds from 280 to 374 by 2023 and creates close to 2,000 new jobs, including nearly 200 physicians by 2029.

“Patients recognize that Mayo Clinic provides some of the best and safest care in the United States. Growing our facilities in Arizona to accommodate increased demand is essential,” says Wyatt W. Decker, M.D., Vice President, Mayo Clinic, and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, which was recently again ranked No. 1 in the state by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals, and is the only Arizona medical center on the prestigious U. S. News Honor Roll. “Mayo’s commitment to the health and vitality of Arizona began when we saw our first patient in Arizona more than 30 years ago. Arizona Forward represents our commitment for the next several decades and beyond – innovating to improve the physical health of patients and the economic health of the state we call home.”

The highlights of the expansion include a new six-story patient tower; a three-floor addition to the existing four-story Mayo Clinic Building; a new three-story building to house an expanded Emergency and other departments; expanded patient and infrastructure space; and additional parking.

Arizona Forward is a five-year project with new patient areas projected to open as early as June 2020, culminating with the final phase opening in April 2023.

News of Mayo Clinic’s expansion was welcomed by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey who said it will support the state in a variety of ways.

“Mayo Clinic’s presence in Arizona has propelled our state’s health care and bioscience industry, and their enhanced investment is another sign that this industry is thriving,” says Gov. Ducey. “Not only will those of us in Arizona be served by expanded services at Mayo Clinic, but it will further secure Arizona as a global destination for excellence in health care.”

As a premier destination medical center in the Southwest, Mayo Clinic has experienced significant campus growth in Arizona over the last five years. Expansion projects on the campus have included the consolidated Cancer Center in the new Mayo Clinic Building, the Proton Beam Facility and the Image Guided Operating Rooms. Other factors that have supported the growth of Mayo’s Arizona practice include increasing specialization in cancer care, neurosurgery, cardiovascular disease and transplant, along with new and expanding insurance contracts.

Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, was recently ranked No. 1 in Arizona and the Phoenix metro area, and No. 11 nationally by U.S. News & World Report. This marks the second time Mayo Clinic has been recognized with two hospitals on U.S. News & World Report's "Best Hospitals Honor Roll," which includes the top 20 hospitals in the nation. Mayo Clinic’s campus in Rochester, Minnesota, ranked No. 1 nationally.

Since opening its Scottsdale, Arizona location more than 30 years ago and its hospital in Phoenix in 1998, Mayo Clinic has grown to become a vital part of health care and medical research in Arizona and throughout the Southwest. Mayo Clinic has brought many medical innovations to Arizona, including Mayo Clinic School of Medicine – Arizona Campus, the development of the first proton beam therapy program in the Southwest, and pioneering work in regenerative medicine and individualized medicine. Also, within the past year, Mayo Clinic's Arizona campus has grown to become one of the largest organ transplant programs in the U.S., and the hospital’s nursing program has received Magnet quality status from the American Nurses Association.

TEMPE, Arizona, and PHOENIX – Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University have announced the launch of a comprehensive new model for health care education and research: the Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University Alliance for Health Care. The goal of the alliance is to innovate health care delivery to improve patient care, accelerate cutting-edge research discoveries, and transform medical education.

The alliance further links two of the Phoenix area’s most recognizable institutions. ASU recently was named the nation’s No. 1 “most innovative” university by U.S. News & World Report. Mayo Clinic earned the No. 1 top ranking nationally on 2016 U.S. News & World Report's Honor Roll of America's Best Hospitals, as well as the No. 1 spots for top hospitals in Arizona and Phoenix, Minnesota and Florida. The formalized alliance provides cohesion to a collection of joint projects, which have evolved over the past decade and sets the stage for many more. This expansion promises growing impact and scale.

Evidence of the alliance soon will rise on land owned by ASU in northeast Phoenix adjacent to Mayo Clinic. ASU is planning to build a 150,000-square-foot Health Solutions Innovation Center to deliver a world-class learning environment. The leading-edge facility will feature a med-tech innovation accelerator, biomedical engineering and informatics research labs, and an education zone. The new facility is scheduled to break ground in 2017.

News conference transcript

One key part of the collaboration involves developing highly skilled physicians who can not only provide the finest in medical care, but also help shape and improve our nation’s complicated health care system. The national Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, which is expanding to Mayo’s Arizona campus in 2017, has collaborated with ASU to develop a specialized curriculum and certification in the science of health care delivery jointly conferred with ASU, which students earn concurrent with their medical degree from Mayo Clinic. Students will have the option of continuing beyond the certification to pursue a master’s degree in the science of health care delivery through ASU.

“We are combining our strengths and forming a comprehensive hub for innovation in health sciences, medical education and health care delivery that is informed by real-world experience,” says Michael Crow, Ph.D., president, ASU. “We are developing new systems and new ways of thinking into a design that will produce positive health care outcomes for patients, not only in our community, but across the country.”

For Mayo Clinic, the alliance spans activities in all three aspects of its mission — patient care, education and research — and is an example of public and private sector collaboration in the design, implementation and delivery of high-value health care.

“This formal agreement paves the way for Mayo Clinic and ASU to strategically focus and deepen our mutual engagement across a full range of activities related to our relentless focus on innovation to create the future of health care,” says Wyatt Decker, M.D., vice president, Mayo Clinic, and CEO, Mayo Clinic in Arizona “It is emblematic of the great work we’ve been doing together for 15 years. Our organizations share similar values around serving our local, regional and national communities by delivering real-world solutions to meaningful challenges. Further, we share an enthusiasm for learning and discovery, and we are equally committed to transforming health and health care delivery.”

Since 2003, leaders from ASU and Mayo Clinic have worked together on a series of strategic collaborations, including dual-degree programs, a nursing education program, collaborative joint research projects, and more than 80 joint faculty appointments and numerous joint intellectual property disclosures. Collaborative initiatives have expanded over the years to encompass business, technology and other components of health care, including education.

The Alliance has also caught the attention of leaders in Arizona.

“There is a collaborative spirit in Arizona that sets us apart from the rest of the country, and there is no better example than what Mayo Clinic and ASU have accomplished," says Doug Ducey, Governor of Arizona. "The two organizations are complementary and they draw on each other’s strengths – their cooperation is truly an example for all who want to grow biosciences in Arizona.”

“Phoenix has made a deep commitment to support biomedicine, healthcare and innovation," says Greg Stanton, Mayor of Phoenix. "This Alliance between Mayo Clinic and ASU - two of the most innovative and respected institutions in the country – moves our region in exactly the direction we need to go. It will spur exciting new developments in healthcare education, research and biomedical technology.”

PHOENIX — Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix is ranked No. 1 in Arizona and the Phoenix metro area in the annual U.S. News & World Report America’s Best Hospital List released today.

Since opening a clinic in Scottsdale in 1987 and hospital in Phoenix in 1998, Mayo Clinic has grown to become a vital part of Arizona and the Southwest, bringing  many medical innovations to Arizona including:

  • Proton beam therapy – part of Mayo Clinic’s National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, this therapy is a more precise radiological cancer treatment using specialized “pencil beam” technology to eradicate hard-to-reach tumors
  • Regenerative medicine – harnessing the potential to repair diseased, injured or congenitally defective tissues and organs
  • Individualized medicine – bringing forward the latest discoveries in genomics-based tests
  • And, soon, the expansion of the Mayo Medical School to Arizona - ushering new ideas to improve quality, outcomes and cost, and to prepare future doctors to not only deliver, but to administer care

Hospitals included in the U.S. News Report are part of an elite group recognized for “breadth of excellence,” according to the magazine. Mayo Clinic in Arizona ranked nationally in 10 specialties including: Cancer, Cardiology and Heart Surgery, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Ear, Nose and Throat, Gastroenterology and Gastroenterologic Surgery, Geriatrics, Nephrology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Pulmonology.

“Recognitions like this are a testament to our skilled and compassionate staff who place patients' needs first every day,” says Wyatt Decker, M.D., vice president, Mayo Clinic, and CEO Mayo Clinic in Arizona. “Mayo Clinic has a long tradition and deep organizational commitment to delivering high-value health care that best meets patients’ needs. We focus on complex care - when your well-being or potentially your life is at stake, Mayo Clinic is a trusted resource for patients. We are proud to be the leader of academic medicine in the Southwest, and will continue to be a beacon of excellence in medical research, education and patient care for Arizonans.”

In addition to the Arizona ranking, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., earned the No. 1 overall spot nationally on U.S. News & World Report's Honor Roll of America's Best Hospitals. Mayo Clinic also took the No. 1 spots in Minnesota and Florida and Jacksonville, Fla.

“We owe our success to our unique system of care as we collaborate across specialties to focus on the individual needs of each patient,” says John Noseworthy, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. “It’s one reason why we consistently receive high rankings in measures like these, and why our patients tell us that the Mayo Clinic experience is unique, providing answers quickly and giving them confidence and hope. This unwavering focus on the patient in everything we do, I believe, is not replicated elsewhere.”

Mayo Clinic’s commitment to quality and collaboration dates back 150 years when the Mayo brothers invented the team-based approach to medicine – an approach that is continuously refined over time. Then and now, Mayo Clinic’s world-class experts work extremely closely across specialties to provide comprehensive and coordinated care for patients with the most serious and complex conditions.

Mayo Clinic in Arizona provides more than 65 medical and surgical specialties including programs in cancer treatment, organ transplantation, neurology and cardiology. In Arizona, a Mayo Clinic staff of more than 6,000 serves nearly 105,000 patients per year from all 50 states and many foreign countries. Mayo Clinic Hospital is a 268-bed, seven-story medical center with more than 12,000 admissions per year and nearly 26,000 emergency department visits.

Mayo Clinic in Arizona has annual impact on the Arizona economy of nearly $2 billion.

This is the 27th year that U.S. News & World Report conducted a rankings list, which encompasses 16 medical specialties. U.S. News analyzes data for 5,000 medical centers to determine the rankings, which were announced today on the U.S. News web site.

Tucson Medical CenterTUCSON, Ariz. – Mayo Clinic officials today announced Tucson Medical Center as a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a national network of organizations committed to better serving patients and their families through collaboration. Members of the network have access to Mayo Clinic knowledge and expertise to give their patients additional peace of mind when making health care decisions, while continuing to offer the highest quality and value of care close to home.

The Mayo Clinic Care Network extends Mayo Clinic’s knowledge and expertise to physicians and providers interested in working together in the best interest of their patients. TMC physicians will now be able to connect with Mayo Clinic specialists on questions of patient care using an electronic consulting technique called eConsults. TMC physicians also will have access to Mayo-vetted medical information through the AskMayoExpert database. These tools, in addition to health care consulting, will help TMC provide the best care for its patients as well as improve its systems and the health of the community.

“We’re proud to welcome the Tucson Medical Center care team to the Mayo Clinic Care Network,” says Wyatt Decker, M.D., vice president, Mayo Clinic, and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona. “Building a closer relationship with Tucson Medical Center through the Care Network provides an opportunity for our two organizations to work together in new ways to provide specialized care, which ultimately enhances the lives of patients throughout Southern Arizona.”

The main goal of the network is to help people gain the benefits of Mayo Clinic expertise without having to travel to a Mayo Clinic facility.

“As an independent, nonprofit community hospital, Tucson Medical Center has a long history of building collaborative relationships that enable us to better meet the needs of our community,” says Judy Rich, TMC’s president and CEO.
