A heart attack begins in one of the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart. Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, is a buildup of plaque inside the artery walls. When plaque ruptures it may create a blood clot large enough to block the artery, cutting off vital blood flow to heart muscle. Heart Attack.
