• Mayo Clinic donates $500,000 to assist Hurricane Irma relief efforts

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Mayo Clinic has donated $500,000 to assist emergency relief efforts following the effects of Hurricane Irma in Northeast Florida and communities throughout Florida.

“We are saddened by the devastation and loss suffered by many people across Florida as a result of Hurricane Irma,” says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., vice president, Mayo Clinic, and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Florida. “We feel immense concern and commitment to helping address needs, especially in Northeast Florida, which is home to many members of our Mayo Clinic family.”

Mayo Clinic’s disaster response to Hurricane Irma provides financial assistance to organizations most closely serving immediate needs in affected areas. To address these needs, Mayo Clinic will donate $500,000 toward disaster relief – $250,000 to the Florida First Coast Relief Fund and $250,000 to the American Red Cross. The Florida First Coast Relief Fund will address needs in the Jacksonville community and surrounding counties. The American Red Cross will help respond to immediate needs for all communities in Florida affected by the storm.

Mayo Clinic recognizes the urgent need for hope and assistance in the regions affected by Hurricane Irma, and understands the responsibility to give back to those in need.

“We believe these financial contributions will best ensure that relief efforts contribute to the immediate as well as long-term stability of the affected areas,” Dr. Farrugia says. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the millions who have been affected and to those within our Mayo community who have a personal connection from this disaster.”

Mayo Clinic, which continues to monitor the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, is in contact with governmental and nongovernmental agencies to assess where it can best be of help. Mayo also remains in close contact with relief agencies to determine whether additional equipment, supplies, personnel or funds may be necessary.
