ROCHESTER, Minn. — Notice any gaps in health care? Mayo Clinic hopes to close the gap between people and their health through Transform 2017 at Mayo Civic Center in Rochester Sept. 27-29. The conference, hosted by the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation, brings world health care leaders together to seek creative solutions to vexing issues.

“Given the current environment, with the transition to value-based payment, and the political and policy uncertainty, there has never been a better time to engage in the conversation about health care,” says Douglas Wood, M.D., a cardiologist, and director, Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation.

The conference brings together hundreds of health care providers, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, technologists, administrators, insurers and more – many who otherwise would never have been in the same room.

“Our goal is to bring together diverse people and actively engage them to look at problems from a new angle, identify new approaches to common problems, and address challenges in health care so they become opportunities for sustainable change,” Dr. Wood says.

Speakers and events at Transform 2017 will include:

  • “The U.S. Health Care System is Terminally Broken”
Intelligence Squared U.S. will host a debate with participants arguing for and against the motion “The U.S. Health Care System is Terminally Broken.” The debate, moderated by John Donvan, New York Times best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize nominee, will be streamed online and broadcast live on TV and radio.
  • Thought leaders Clayton Christensen and Elisabeth Rosenthal, M.D.
Clayton Christensen, Harvard Business School professor, and Elisabeth Rosenthal, M.D., Kaiser Health News editor-in-chief, will share their personal experiences in health care innovation during the closing session. Christensen is the author of the New York Times best-selling How Will You Measure Your Life? and The Innovator’s Dilemma, named by The Economist as one of six classic business books of the last half-century. Rosenthal, who will also moderate Transform 2017, is a former New York Times reporter, and author of An American Sickness: How Healthcare Became Big Business and How You Can Take it Back.
  • Former Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) head Andy Slavitt
Andy Slavitt was acting administrator for CMS for the last two years of President Barack Obama’s administration, overseeing Medicaid, Medicare, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and the Health Insurance Marketplace. Transform’s opening session, which will set the stage for the conference, will feature Slavitt. He will examine the fundamental divides between people and health, along with four other health care leaders.
