• Mayo Clinic Named a 2013 DiversityInc Top 10 Hospital System

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic has been ranked No. 6 on the 2013 DiversityInc Top 10 Hospital System for its ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. This is the second year that Mayo has made the list. Last year, Mayo earned the No. 4 position on the Top 5 Hospital Systems list. This year's rankings were announced at the annual DiversityInc Top 50 event in New York on April 23.

"This acknowledgement recognizes the good work being done across Mayo Clinic," says John Noseworthy, M.D., president and CEO, Mayo Clinic. "Part of working differently includes embracing diverse perspectives so Mayo can continue providing the very best care for our patients in a changing health care environment."

Companies named to the DiversityInc Top 10 Hospital Systems have at least 1,000 employees and submit a detailed 300-question survey based on measurement in four key areas:

  • CEO commitment to diversity management.
  • Workforce diversity and human capital.
  • Corporate and organizational communications.
  • Supplier diversity.

Mayo Clinic has long brought together people with diverse talents, experiences and beliefs to best serve their patients. Today, Mayo Clinic staff continues to uphold the importance of diversity and inclusion by creating a caring service environment where individual differences are valued, allowing individuals to achieve and contribute to their fullest potential.

Mayo earns its spot on the hospital list for the second year in a row because of its effective diversity-management strategies under Sharonne Hayes, M.D., director, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, says Luke Visconti, CEO, DiversityInc.

"For example, its ratio of management promotions for women compared to management demographics is 1.29:1, versus 1.02:1 for the DiversityInc Top 50," he notes.

"The ability to provide the best health care, tailored to meet each and every patient's needs, depends on Mayo Clinic having a vibrant, diverse and engaged workforce," says Dr. Hayes. "We've been able to leverage Mayo's laser focus on our patients, a trait that's already a part of every Mayo employee's DNA, to not only improve the patient experience, but to become a more inclusive, equitable and innovative workplace."
