Mayo Clinic in Florida awarded top national certification for advanced total hip, knee replacement
Mayo Clinic in Florida has been awarded the Advanced Total Hip, Knee Replacement certification from The Joint Commission, one of the highest quality standard certification programs in the nation. As part of its evaluation, The Joint Commission requires hospitals meet the most stringent clinical practice guidelines, quality metrics, and performance improvement initiatives for outstanding patient care and outcomes. An independent, nonprofit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.
"We are honored to receive The Joint Commission’s certification, the highest standard of practice that all programs should be judged by," says Cameron Ledford, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and director of Mayo Clinic in Florida’s Advanced Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement Program. "For Mayo Clinic, obtaining this gold standard recognition provides transparency for our patients so that they can see that we're achieving outstanding results, and that we will continue to use these measurable outcomes to further improve our process."
Mayo Clinic earned the advanced certification after a thorough and rigorous review of its program during an on-site visit by The Joint Commission in September. The organization evaluated Mayo Clinic’s compliance with advanced disease-specific care standards and total hip and total knee replacement requirements, including orthopedic consultation, and preoperative, intraoperative and postsurgical orthopedic surgeon follow-up care. The Joint Commission certification program is the only one that collaborates with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons to assure the highest quality standards and safest patient care are met.
To maintain certification, an on-site evaluation and review is required every two years to ensure hospitals and health care organizations meet The Joint Commission’s high standards and measurement parameters.
More than 7 million Americans are currently living with a hip or knee replacement. By 2030, more than 11 million Americans will either have a hip or knee replacement, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
"Hip and knee replacement is one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States and worldwide," Dr. Ledford says. "Within the Mayo Clinic enterprise, we performed thousands of these replacement surgeries, including more than 1,300 at Mayo Clinic in Florida. It's important for patients to know that they have a choice based on a program’s reputation, and advanced certification status helps them be assured they are getting the best care possible."
