Research offers hope for people with diabetes

MEDIA ADVISORY: Mayo Clinic experts available for interviews during National Diabetes Month
November is American Diabetes Month. Imagine treating diabetes and checking glucose levels with no needle sticks and an annual check instead of a daily check.
That’s the goal at Mayo Clinic, where researchers are studying the use of electrical pulses in lieu of needle sticks, to make living with diabetes much easier.
Mayo Clinic experts are available for an interview throughout November. They can discuss the research and what may be on the horizon for patients.
Consider these stats on diabetes (from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention):
- Approximately 37.3 million Americans (1 in 10) have diabetes. Of that number, 1.9 million have Type 1 diabetes.
- More than 35 million Americans (1 in 10) have Type 2 diabetes.
- Approximately 96 million (more than 1 in 3) have prediabetes. Of those, 80% don’t know they have it.
- Diabetes impacts all social, economic and ethnic backgrounds.
- Diabetes can affect many parts of the body and is associated with serious complications, such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and lower-limb amputation, among other conditions.
