Have you ever wondered what happens to your blood after it's collected from the vein in your arm?
I thought I'd enlighten everyone by giving some insight into the inner workings of a clinical laboratory. Mayo Clinic was very fortunate to be a featured "Top Health Care Employer" for CareerTV. During October 2008, producers from CareerTV were at Mayo Clinic s to film the Metals laboratories within the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP)!
The Metals lab is one of more than 60 laboratories within DLMP. It's a small, specialized lab that includes an ISO class 7 cleanroom for ultra-trace elemental analysis. This lab routinely performs analysis for essential (calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc and iron), heavy (arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium and thallium) and trace metals (aluminum, chromium, manganese, silver, gold, nickel, etc.) in biological samples.
