Grapefruit and certain other citrus fruits can interfere with several types of prescription medications.
Problems arise because chemicals in the fruit can interfere with the enzymes that break down (metabolize) the medication in your digestive system. As a result, the medication may stay in your body for too short or too long a time.
Some of these interactions can cause potentially dangerous health problems. And simply taking your medication and eating your grapefruit at different times doesn't prevent the problem.
Learn more from Katherine Zeratsky, a Mayo Clinic registered dietitian nutritionist, about the way grapefruit and other citrus fruits may interact with your medications.
