Do Patients Know They’re Taking Off-Label Drugs?
Off-label drug use is common, according to a recent article publish in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, but many patients may not know they’re taking them. The practice involves physicians prescribing medications for the treatment of a malady or condition that has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) for that particular usage.
Lead author Christopher Wittich, M.D., says, “Since the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the practice of medicine, off-label drug use has become very common. Health care providers and patients should educate themselves about off-label drugs in order to weigh the risks and benefits before a physician prescribes one or a patient takes one.”
