Economic and Health Care Challenges Interlinked; Mayo Clinic Calls for Solutions that are the Best for Patients
Post-election response from John Noseworthy, M.D., President and CEO, Mayo Clinic
"America has just completed an historic election. While we congratulate victors and celebrate our democratic process, we all recognize that the challenges faced by the President, the new Congress and our nation are significant.
"To preserve and strengthen our nation's economy, it is imperative that we take action now to create a new health care model for America. The current model is unsustainable. Care for patients is fragmented, reimbursement inequitable and imprecise. An uncertain economy, challenges of an aging population and the federal deficit have combined to put even greater pressure on our nation and the country's not-for-profit health care organizations.
"We at Mayo Clinic invite the President and Congress to work with us and others in the private sector to find a solution that is squarely focused on what is best for patients and is economically sustainable for our country. We make this offer from a position that is empowered by decades of experience building value-based solutions that focus on better health outcomes at the lowest cost.
"For nearly 150 years, patients from around the nation and the world have come to Mayo Clinic for answers they could not find elsewhere. In the current environment, Mayo Clinic, and other premier not-for-profit health care organizations that train future physicians and health care professionals and discover tomorrow's cures, face profound challenges. Without meaningful change, the ability of Mayo Clinic and other not-for-profit organizations to continue to provide the world's highest quality care will be compromised.
"We stand ready to participate in working collaboratively with the government and others to build solutions that are in the best interests of all patients and the nation."
