Fredric Meyer, M.D.ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic announced today that Fredric Meyer, M.D., has been selected as the Juanita Kious Waugh Executive Dean for Education, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, effective July 1, 2016. He will succeed Mark Warner, M.D., who has served as executive dean since 2012 and will be returning to clinical practice.

“Mayo Clinic has a long tradition of educational excellence – training current and future physicians, scientists and clinical staffs with the advanced knowledge, research skills and patient-centered care practices for which Mayo is renowned,” says John Noseworthy, M.D., Mayo Clinic president and CEO. “Under Dr. Meyer’s leadership, we will continue to broaden the scope of these educational endeavors to build a strong future workforce to meet the needs of our patients, and engage on a national level to advance medical and scientific education across the country.”

Dr. Meyer will lead the educational strategies and direction of Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, which includes five schools – Mayo Medical School, Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education, Mayo School of Health Sciences, Mayo Graduate School and Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development – along with numerous academic support units. These schools span across Mayo sites in Scottsdale/Phoenix, Arizona; Jacksonville, Florida; Rochester, Minnesota and Mayo Clinic Health System. Inclusive in his new role, Dr. Meyer will also assume the role of Mayo Medical School Dean on July 1, 2016, succeeding Michele Halyard, M.D., who has served as interim dean since May 2015. Dr. Halyard will continue as the Suzanne Hanson Poole Vice Dean for the medical school.

Dr. Meyer brings a wealth of educational and leadership experience to his new role. He is the Alfred Uihlein Family Professor of Neurologic Surgery within the College of Medicine and has been named Teacher of the Year 14 times. In 2011, he received the Distinguished Educator Award – Mayo’s highest honor in Education. He has served as program director of the Neurologic Surgery Program at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education and held faculty privileges in clinical and translational research at Mayo Graduate School. Among his many national commitments, he is a past member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Past President of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery and Past Chair of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Meyer completed his residency at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education and joined Mayo Clinic as a consultant in the Department of Neurosurgery in 1987. He is enterprise chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and will continue in that role.

“Our goal will be to expand on the great work that has made education at Mayo Clinic so exceptional,” says Dr. Meyer. “We are committed to developing the next generation of expert researchers, health care providers and leaders who will shape the future of medicine and scientific discovery.”

Among his efforts, Dr. Meyer will continue to advance the national expansion of Mayo Medical School. Along with the original four-year program in Rochester, Minnesota that was established in 1972, a new four-year school program is slated to open in Arizona in 2017. Applications for the inaugural class on the Arizona campus begin June 1, 2016. Planning is also underway for expansion of the medical school to Mayo’s Florida campus.

Another priority will include expanding Mayo’s presence and leadership voice in the national academic arena. “We have a moral responsibility to advance medical and research education across our country to keep pace with the evolving health care environment and ensure the best care for future generations,” says Dr. Meyer.

Dr. Meyer says he looks forward to empowering all of Mayo’s intellectual community to contribute to the education mission. He plans to work with leaders and educators within Mayo’s College of Medicine to evolve and advance each of the schools, develop new educational platforms using technology and expand academic collaborations to deliver innovative education to Mayo’s current and future learners.
