According to the National Center for Health Statistics, close to 330,000 hip replacements are performed in the U.S. each year. Many replacements are done to ease the pain of osteoarthritis, also called 'wear and tear' arthritis. While most patients are over the age of 60, younger patients are opting for surgery so they can stay active. At Mayo Clinic, an alternative approach to standard hip replacement is offered, which stops the pain and enables many patients to return to normal activities sooner. Vivien Williams has this report.
