Mayo Clinic and Medica announce plans to create insurance products
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic and Medica launched an agreement to jointly develop health insurance products and services for consumers across the country.
These new product offerings will draw on Mayo Clinic’s expertise in health care delivery, offering an unparalleled experience as the most trusted source of care for complex health care needs. Medica, Mayo Clinic’s insurance partner under the agreement, will provide its deep expertise in health plan administration, consumer engagement and customer service.
Together, Mayo Clinic and Medica will partner with local health care systems, ensuring continued and convenient access to these trusted local providers for consumers. When rare and complex care is required, those providers can leverage Mayo Clinic as a resource. This high level of coordination among local providers and Mayo Clinic specialists will ensure the best possible outcome for each patient with complex medical needs.
“Mayo Clinic and Medica share a commitment to collaboration, compassion, customer service and innovation. Together, we’ve worked diligently to advance health care, improve the consumer experience and make health care delivery more efficient,” says John Naylor, president and CEO, Medica. This expanded relationship will benefit not only both organizations, but also the people in the communities we serve.”
“We are pleased to collaborate with Medica on the development of products that will include access to Mayo Clinic for patients who would benefit from expert specialists and resources,” says Dennis Dahlen, chief financial officer, Mayo Clinic. “Our relationship with Medica and future product offerings support a collaborative model of care delivery and coordination of services with better outcomes for patients with complex and serious illness.”
The agreement is building upon a well-established collaboration between Mayo Clinic and Medica. The organizations have developed accountable care organization (ACO) products that serve the commercial group and individual markets in Southeastern Minnesota and Southwestern Wisconsin. Mayo Clinic is a center of excellence for many of Medica’s other insurance products. In 2017, Medica acquired Mayo Clinic’s third-party administrator business, MMSI, Inc., which does business as Mayo Clinic Health Solutions. Customers, including Mayo Clinic staff, will transition to Medica’s technology platform and customer service model, beginning on Jan. 1, 2019.
