Mayo Clinic celebrates ‘Defining Innovation’ with Heritage Days Oct. 1-7

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic’s annual Heritage Days takes place next week, Oct. 1-7. The festivities will be held across all Mayo Clinic locations. This year’s theme, “Defining Innovation,” places special emphasis on the career and life of Henry Plummer, M.D.
Heritage Days’ mission is to thank all members of the Mayo Clinic community for their tireless efforts in offering the best care and service to patients. The week is also a time to reflect on Mayo’s history and values.
All are welcome to the Heritage Days events Oct. 1-7:
- Oct. 1, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. CDT, Plummer Building
Attend a Mayo History Open House of the Plummer Building – the first since its grand opening in 1928. Architectural and academic artifacts, as well as Dr. Plummer’s personal effects, will be available for viewing. Attendants will greet visitors at the door and escort them through the building just as in the old days. Wax models of thyroid disease (Dr. Plummer’s specialty) will be on display in addition to a Lego model of the building itself. You also can meet peregrine falcons outside of the Plummer Building on Annenberg Plaza . - Oct. 1, noon CDT, Annenberg Plaza
Listen to a carillon concert. Mayo Clinic carillonneur Jeffrey Daehn will perform a number of selections, beginning with “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” as it has been performed in every concert since the carillon’s installation in 1928. - Oct. 3-6, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. CDT, Annenberg Plaza
Check out the vintage vehicle display. A 1969 Z/28 Camaro and 1969 Shelby Mustang GT 500 owned by John L.D. Atkinson, M.D., demonstrate innovative design and high-impact performance – two common themes in this year’s Heritage Days events. - Oct. 3-7, various times, Geffen Auditorium, Gonda Subway
See the premiere of a new Heritage Film, “Forever Looking Forward: The Remarkable Life of Dr. Henry S. Plummer.” The film follows the life of medical pioneer Dr. Plummer from a small Minnesota town to the envisioning of Mayo Clinic’s first medical building. Find showtimes on the Heritage Days website. - Oct. 3-7, subway system and various Mayo Clinic lounges, beginning at 11:45 a.m. CDT daily
Enjoy lunchtime entertainment, including a variety of jazz, blues, folk and violin musical acts. Acts will be performed daily in the Lips Atrium (Charlton subway), Matthews Grand Lobby (Mayo Building), Patient & Visitor Cafeteria (Siebens subway), Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center Café and Francis Tower Lobby (Saint Mary's campus). An additional performance will take place Thursday at the Landow Atrium in the Gonda subway. - Oct. 5, 1:30 p.m. CDT, Research Information Center, Gonda Building
Following in the spirit of innovation, meet Aleksander Sekulic, M.D., Ph.D., and learn about the efforts to personalize treatments and identify novel genetic drivers in skin disease with the Center for Individualized Medicine and cancer research.
