Mayo Clinic Named to Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” List
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Fortune magazine named Mayo Clinic to its list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" in 2013. This is Mayo's 10th consecutive year on the magazine's annual compilation of companies that rate high with employees. The list ranks Mayo Clinic 41 overall among the top 100 companies.
"We congratulate our employees for earning Mayo Clinic this distinction," says John H. Noseworthy, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. "Their bright minds and passionate service give Mayo Clinic its world reputation as a place of hope and solutions for patients. We have 60,000 individuals who link arms with one another to support our patients and their families."
"And we do mean every one of those 60,000 individuals changes lives at Mayo Clinic," says Shirley Weis, Mayo Clinic vice president and chief administrative officer. "There is a saying here that if you are not directly delivering patient care, you are helping someone who does. We tell our employees that they are 'the power of one' times 60,000. We hope they take great pride in this "100 Best" national recognition."
On its "100 Best" website, Fortune cites Mayo Clinic for its use of social media and includes our benefits in its perk finder comparison tool. In a new feature this year, Fortune interviewed employees at several companies, including Mayo Clinic's Perry Erdahl, about what influenced their decision to work at a "100 Best" company.
Before working in the Center for Innovation at Mayo Clinic, Erdahl was the father of a patient. His son, Jake, was diagnosed with liver cancer at 7 years old, and the family had been told his prognosis was dire.
They brought him to Mayo Clinic, where a team of doctors discovered their son had a different kind of cancer than previously thought. They changed the course of treatment, and Jake's condition improved. "He's 21 now. He's a junior in college. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school," Erdahl tells Fortune. "You would never know what he went through."
This year, 259 companies and more than 277,000 employees participated in the list process. To pick the "100 Best Companies to Work For," Fortune partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the Institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company.
The survey asks questions about management's credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. The other one-third of the score is based on the companies' responses to the Institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts.
The print copy of Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For" edition will be on newsstands Jan. 21.
