Mayo Clinic’s chief administrative officer to retire Nov. 30

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Jeff Bolton, Mayo Clinic's chief administrative officer, has announced his plans to retire on Nov. 30. He has been Mayo Clinic's chief administrative officer since 2013 and a member of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees since 2011. He joined Mayo Clinic in 2002 as its chief financial officer.

"I have appreciated his partnership and counsel, strong commitment to our mission and patients, excellent strategic insight and strong working relationships with people across Mayo Clinic. I've particularly valued his contributions to our COVID-19 pandemic response, his leadership to promote equity at Mayo Clinic, and his partnership to Cure, Connect and Transform health care for the benefit of our patients. He is a wonderful colleague and friend."
During Jeff Bolton's leadership tenure, Mayo Clinic has made significant progress toward its "Bold. Forward." strategic plan, including establishing the Center for Digital Health and Mayo Clinic Platform, and expanding the Mayo Clinic Model of Care to sites in London and Abu Dhabi. He played a key role in helping establish the Destination Medical Center initiative in Rochester ― the largest public-private economic initiative in Minnesota. During his tenure as the leader of Mayo Clinic's administrative services, the organization was named the No. 1 hospital in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for six consecutive years, and Mayo Clinic achieved its best annual financial performance to date.
Jeff Bolton was named CFO of the Year in the Large Health Care Organization award category in 2010 by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. The recognition noted his expert skills in helping guide Mayo through the 2008 recession and to a quick recovery, noting: "Bolton began shoring up the clinic's finances long before the crash. He and other members of the senior leadership team saw at the end of 2007 that patient flow and volumes were changing, and they began to look for ways to reduce expenses and preserve capital."

Before coming to Mayo Clinic, Jeff Bolton held various finance-related positions at Carnegie Mellon University, including chief financial officer and vice president of Business and Planning.
Jeff Bolton has a bachelor's degree from The Pennsylvania State University, and an MBA and a master's in social work, from the University of Pittsburgh. He serves on the boards of directors of Resoundant Inc., the Destination Medical Center Economic Development Agency, St. Olaf College and Vizient Inc.
A search process for Mayo Clinic's new chief administrative officer is underway. A new chief administrative officer will be announced in the fall.
