Mayo flags at half-staff to honor former President Jimmy Carter
At the direction of an executive order issued by President Joe Biden, Mayo Clinic has lowered its flags at all locations to half-staff until sunset on Jan. 30, 2025, in honor and remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter.
Mayo Clinic remembers the life of former President Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at age 100. Mayo Clinic teams were privileged to connect with the American statesman during his lifetime.
"We are saddened by the loss of former President Jimmy Carter," says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. "His legacy is one of public service and a decades-long dedication to humanitarian causes. Those efforts have been especially inspiring to us, given Mayo Clinic's humanitarian mission. We offer our sincere condolences to the Carter family."
Mayo Clinic's connection to former President Carter dates back to 1983 when he and his wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, were among the first to subscribe to Mayo Clinic Health Letter upon its launch.
In subsequent years, President Carter met with Haidong Dong, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic researcher in Immunology. The 2016 meeting was an occasion for Dr. Dong to see firsthand how his research into immunotherapy for cancer decades earlier had helped President Carter receive successful treatment of metastatic melanoma in 2015.
The decision to lower the flags reflects the passing of an American president and is in keeping with Mayo's practice of following a national or statewide declaration that flags should be lowered at public buildings.
