According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 220,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women each year in the U.S. That means breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in their lifetime. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign started back in 1985 to increase awareness of the disease. On Mayo Clinic Radio, breast cancer specialist Dr. Sandhya Pruthi discusses advancements in treatments and improved survival rates for breast cancer. Also on the program, breast surgeon Dr. Judy Boughey explains the latest recommendations on contralateral prophylactic mastectomy and discusses whether a healthy breast should be removed as a preventative measure against future cancer risk. And Mayo Clinic colorectal surgeon Dr. Robert Cima shares five questions to ask your surgeon before surgery.
