BACKGROUND: In 2010, the Mayo Clinic Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) Space and Facilities Committee performed a comprehensive assessment of its clinical laboratory space needs through 2015. The results of that assessment identified the need for 20,000 square feet of incremental wet lab space. In 2013, this information was reaffirmed. The wet lab space on the downtown campus is near capacity, and historical trends suggest that DLMP will continue to grow at 3 to 5 percent per year.

The new expansion area at the Superior Drive Support Center has two floors. Each of the two floors have approximately 29,600 square feet. A rooftop mechanical room adds 9,630 sq. ft. of space for HVAC systems. Four laboratories from the Division of Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology are relocating to this new facility: Endocrinology, Proteomics Core, Toxicology and Drug Monitoring, and a section of the Clinical Immunoassay Laboratory. This relocation frees up 23,840 net square feet in the downtown Hilton Building, which allows for strategic growth of other clinical laboratories on the Mayo campus in Rochester.
“This expansion brings four of our high-volume laboratories together in one location. The expansion and consolidation of these labs will yield higher efficiencies and stronger collaboration among staff, which will allow us to continue developing clinical tests that ultimately lead to better patient care,” says Matt Binnicker, Ph.D., chair of the DLMP Facilities and Space Committee.
