Today is World Stroke Day and is meant to raise awareness about the symptoms of stroke, types of strokes and recovery treatments. A stroke can occur when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and food. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. A stroke is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment is crucial. Mayo Clinic neurologist Robert Brown Jr., M.D., says, "The key issue is to seek emergency medical care, because there are potential treatments available to try to reduce the deficits and difficulties that might be apparent over the long term."
