• Mayo Clinic Radio: Weight gain in middle-aged women

woman measuring her waistA common problem for women as they age is weight gain. On average, women in their 50s and 60s gain 1.5 pounds per year. Hot flashes, sleep disturbances and mood changes during menopause can disrupt what was otherwise a healthy lifestyle. A Mayo Clinic study recently published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings looked at the risks and challenges of weight gain for middle-aged women. This study led researchers to develop a series of recommendations.

On the next Mayo Clinic Radio program, Dr. Ekta Kapoor, an endocrinologist at Mayo Clinic and lead author of the study, will discuss the study findings and other problems women face as they reach menopause. Also on the program, Dr. Pritish Tosh, an infectious diseases specialist at Mayo Clinic, discusses the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. And Dr. Catherine Raspberry, a health scientist in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Adolescent and School Health, joins the program to discuss a recent CDC report on health behaviors and academic achievement among high school students.
