Mayo Clinic lighting buildings to recognize Pride Month

Facilities in Rochester, Arizona and Florida will be lighted in rainbow hues June 28 in recognition of Pride Month, which is celebrated each June.

Mayo Clinic will light the Plummer Building in Rochester, Mayo Clinic Hospital in Arizona, and the sign at the main entrance to Mayo Clinic in Florida in rainbow hues on June 28. The display is in recognition of Pride Month celebrated around the U.S. in June to support and raise awareness of the LGBTQI+ community.
Pride Month and the LGBTQI+ human rights movement came to be in the aftermath of the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. The riots were a series of violent confrontations that began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, between police and gay rights activists outside the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village section of New York City.
Discrimination continues to underline many health disparities for LGBTQI+ people, including higher rates of sexually transmitted infections including HIV, substance abuse, unhealthy weight control and body perception, smoking, depression, anxiety, suicide, homelessness, violence and victimization.
This is the third time Mayo Clinic has lighted its facilities in recognition of Pride Month. Mayo Clinic is proud to support the LGBTQI+ community and ensure equal protection for all by standing up against discrimination.
Mayo Clinic lights its facilities to raise awareness about medical conditions, observe periods of public mourning, and in recognition of certain holidays, including Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran's Day.
