Mayo Clinic-led networks approved for more than $10 million to participate in PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Two collaborative networks led by Mayo Clinic were approved for three-year funding awards by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), becoming part of PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network.
PCORnet is a large collaborative initiative designed to link researchers, patient communities, clinicians and health systems in productive research partnerships that leverage the power of large volumes of health data maintained by the partner networks. PCORnet will enable the nation to conduct clinical research more quickly and less expensively, and ensure that research focuses on the questions and outcomes that matter most to patients and those who care for them.
PCORnet consists of two types of networks working toward that combined goal: clinical data research networks and patient powered research networks.
Mayo is involved with both types of networks and received awards for the following:
- Patient-Centered Network of Learning Health Systems (LHSNet), which includes partners across six states and nine academic medical centers, health care systems, public health departments, and private health plans touching approximately 10 million individual lives, including patients in underserved and rural areas. LHSNet received more than $8.6 million for the three year project period.
- National Alzheimer's and Dementia Patient and Caregiver-Powered Research Network (AD PCPRN), which received more than $1.53 million, is co-led by USAgainstAlzheimer’s (USA2), the University of California, San Francisco’s, Brain Health Registry and Mayo Clinic.

“We're delighted to welcome LHSNet and AD PCRN into our mutual efforts to build what we intend to be a premier national resource for conducting high-quality, patient-centered clinical research,” said PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, M.D., M.P.H. “They will be a superb addition to the other PCORnet partners as PCORnet readies to begin an exciting second phase of expansion and the launch of several research studies.”
These networks comprise two of the seven new health data networks approved by PCORI’s Board of Governors to be added to the PCORnet national health research resource which consists of 34 networks in total.
“The clinical data research network award will enable us to advance comparative effectiveness research and clinical trials, and improve care across our patient-centered collaborative network, while contributing to national health goals,” says Véronique Roger, M.D., M.P.H. (@veroniqueroger1), who is LHSNet co-principal investigator and director of the Mayo Clinic Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery (CSHCD).
“It is a major achievement for Mayo and our collaborators around the country,” says Sundeep Khosla, M.D., who is LHSNet co-principal investigator and director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS). “It also reflects the strong partnership and synergy between CCaTS and the CSHCD. CCaTS brings expertise in clinical trials, while the CSHCD brings expertise in population health and in managing large clinical databases — an ideal partnership for achieving the goals of this grant.”
LHSNet is advancing a number of different projects that could improve how health care is delivered, including additional synergistic collaborations with AD PCPRN.
“We are thrilled that the [AD PCPRN] network has been awarded these patient powered research network funds,” says Dr. Petersen (@ronpetersenmd), AD PCPRN principal investigator. “This will allow us to expand the involvement of patients and caregivers from across a more diverse population, particularly Latino and African-Americans, who unfortunately experience a higher incidence of Alzheimer’s and related dementias than other groups. Together, we can get closer to a cure.”
The successful award applications were submitted by two co-principal investigators who recently left Mayo Clinic: Jyotishman Pathak, Ph.D. (@jyotipathak), LHSNet, and Glenn Smith, Ph.D., AD PCPRN. Both networks include collaborating researchers and clinicians from numerous partner organizations.
