Carbon ion therapy: A new era in precision cancer care

Mayo Clinic's newest radiation therapy capabilities are housed at the new Duan Family Building which opened in July 2025. The building expands and integrates services for patients in need of complex cancer care, offering leading-edge radiation oncology and radiology services. Carbon ion therapy is among those advances, and Mayo Clinic in Florida will be the only facility in the Americas providing this therapy when it becomes available in early 2028.
This episode explores why researchers believe carbon ions may offer a powerful advantage over traditional radiation. Unlike conventional radiation beams that pass through the body, carbon ions can be delivered with remarkable precision while causing more extensive damage to cancer cells, which are difficult to destroy. Physicians say the technology could be especially valuable to treat tumors located near critical structures such as the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, as well as recurrent cancers and certain pancreatic and sarcoma tumors that often resist standard treatments. The conversation reveals how decades of international research, physics and engineering have paved the way for this next generation of cancer care.
