New SW Region VP for Mayo Clinic Health System
ROCHESTER, Minn. — James R. Hebl, M.D., has been named regional vice president, Mayo Clinic Health System Southwest Minnesota Region.
Dr. Hebl will be the physician leader for Mayo Clinic’s community practice in Southwest Minnesota, a region that includes six hospitals and 22 clinics. He succeeds Greg Kutcher, M.D., who has served in the role since 2007 and who will transition to a leadership role as a Hospice/Palliative Care physician.
In this new role, Dr. Hebl, along with his administrative partner, Rich Grace, will provide organizational leadership and direction and be responsible for the overall performance of Southwest Minnesota operations, including outcomes, safety, service and financial performance. Dr. Hebl will promote and expand Mayo Clinic Health System’s foundation of providing high-value care, supporting local wellness and promoting overall community health.Dr. Hebl will transition into the new role over the next several weeks to ensure a smooth leadership transition for Mayo Clinic’s community practice in Southwest Minnesota.

“Dr. Hebl is an excellent choice for this vital role,” says Bobbie Gostout, M.D., vice president, Mayo Clinic. “He has a unique combination of leadership experience both in Rochester and Mayo Clinic Health System. He led a successful and impactful surgical process improvement initiative in Rochester that brought improvements in operating room utilization, teamwork and the patient experience. He currently serves as chair for the Community Division of Anesthesia, and in that role, has been very responsive in crafting solutions to meet the changing needs of the surgical practice in Mankato and throughout the Southwest Minnesota Region. Dr. Hebl also brings academic credentials and experience that will help foster a stronger presence for research and education within Mayo Clinic Health System.”
Adds Dr. Gostout, “Mayo Clinic Health System in Southwest Minnesota brings the resources and expertise of Mayo Clinic to over 20 sites in the region, and Dr. Hebl will provide the vision and leadership to integrate these capabilities to provide the best patient care possible.”
A native of the Mankato area, Dr. Hebl has a deep connection with the region. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in natural science and psychology from Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. Dr. Hebl completed his internship and anesthesiology residency at Mayo Clinic, as well as a regional anesthesia and clinical research fellowship sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. He is also completing education and training in business administration with the American Society of Anesthesiologists in collaboration with the University of Houston.
Dr. Hebl is professor of Anesthesiology and vice chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. He is Board Certified with the American Board of Anesthesiology and Past President of the Minnesota Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Hebl is currently chair of the Division of Community Anesthesiology in Mayo Clinic Health System and chair for Practice Convergence and Integration. He serves on various national boards, including the Board of Directors of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Hebl and his wife, Heather, have three children and currently live in Rochester, Minnesota.
