Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees elects Katherine Baicker as public trustee
Dr. Baicker is the dean and the Emmett Dedmon Professor at The University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy. She is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Social Insurance, and American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
"Dr. Baicker brings a great blend of experience, including in health care economics and insurance, to our Board of Trustees," says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., Mayo Clinic's president and CEO. "She will be an important voice in our board discussions, especially about the cost and value of care."
Dr. Baicker also serves on the Congressional Budget Office's Panel of Health Advisers, and as a director of Eli Lilly and Company and HMS Holdings. She is a member of the Advisory Board for the National Institute for Health Care Management and a trustee of NORC at the University of Chicago. She has also served as chair of the Board of Directors of AcademyHealth and as a Senate-confirmed member of the president's Council of Economic Advisers.
Dr. Baicker's research focuses on the effectiveness of public and private health insurance, including the effect of reforms on the distribution and quality of care. She is one of the leaders of the Oregon Health Insurance Experiment, a randomized study of the effects of Medicaid coverage. She received a bachelor's degree in economics from Yale University and a doctorate in economics from Harvard University.
The Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees, a 31-member group of public representatives, and Mayo Clinic physicians and administrators, is responsible for patient care, medical education and research at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota, as well as Mayo Clinic Health System, a network of clinics and hospitals serving more than 60 communities in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
