Mayo Clinic to hold first Middle East Healthcare Social Media Summit in Dubai

Mayo Clinic, a global leader in medical care, education and research, will bring the first Middle East Healthcare Social Media Summit to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in December to promote safe and effective health-related use of social media.

American Hospital Dubai, a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, and Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), are cosponsors of the Summit.

The summit includes:

  • Conference Dec. 9-10
This conference will feature several speakers from the UAE, as well as representatives from Saudi Arabia, Ireland, New Zealand and the U.S.
  • Optional preconference workshop
This "Social Media Residency" workshop, which will be held Dec. 8, will provide advanced training and consultation for those interested in practical assistance in applying social media tools in their health-related work.

Mayo Clinic has hosted annual social media conferences in the U.S. since 2010. Mayo Clinic held its first international social media summit in Brisbane, Australia, in 2015. The Dubai summit, also designated #hcsmDXB19, will be the first such event in the Middle East.

Hospitals and health professionals are encouraged to use social media #hcsmDXB19

"Mayo Clinic is the No. 1 hospital in the United States and is the global leader among hospitals encouraging physicians and other health professionals to use social media," says Amer Sharif, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., vice chancellor of MBRU. "We are honored to host this Summit, and to help shape an agenda that reflects social media use in our region as well as best practices from Mayo Clinic’s global network of social media advocates."

Summit organizers met in early September at MBRU to plan the event.

Mayo Clinic also sponsors the Mayo Clinic Social Media Network (MCSMN), which offers resources, training modules and an online community for health care professionals interested in exploring and sharing best practices for using social media in their work. Events like #hcsmDXB19 provide opportunities for face-to-face interaction and cross-cultural sharing.

"We're gratified to have such strong cosponsors who have helped us develop an outstanding program for the summit,” says Farris Timimi, M.D., medical director for MCSMN. “They have identified speakers and panelists from the UAE, and with our international MCSMN members, as well as Mayo Clinic staff as faculty, our course will include diverse perspectives and a thought-provoking curriculum."

The summit is accredited by the Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development and participants may receive continuing education credit. Registration includes a one-year premium membership in MCSMN.
