Relief for Cancer Patient’s Mouth Sores

Patients who undergo radiation therapy for cancers of the head and neck face a lot of painful mouth sores or oral mucositis. Now Mayo Clinic researchers have found that an oral rinse of the antidepressant doxepin can significantly ease the pain.
Mayo Clinic radiation oncologist and principal investigator Robert Miller, M.D., says,“Oral mucositis or mouth sores is a painful and debilitating side effect of radiation therapy and our findings represent a new standard of care for treating this condition.” These findings are being presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology annual meeting.
