• The Mayo Clinic Platform expands leadership team, initiatives

The Mayo Clinic Platform, launched in 2019 to transform health care using technology, big data and artificial intelligence, is expanding. Maneesh Goyal has been named chief operating officer and rounds out the leadership team, which includes John Halamka, M.D., president, Mayo Clinic Platform and Clark Otley, M.D., chief medical officer, Mayo Clinic Platform.

In this new role, Goyal will oversee the platform's strategic and operating plans, including financial performance and growth; recruiting talent; and developing processes, systems and infrastructure for the platform business network. Also, Goyal will execute strategies to attract external partners and collaborators, navigate the regulatory and legal environment, invest and manage businesses developed within ― and partnering with ― the platform, and provide thought leadership nationally.

Goyal has been deeply involved in the development of Mayo Clinic Platform, serving as vice chair of corporate development since November 2019. He co-developed the initial platform business model, led strategy and created business plans for the home hospital platform. Goyal also helped launch the Advanced Care at Home program, which allows patients with conditions previously managed in a hospital to have the option to transition to a home setting and receive high-quality virtual and in-person care and recovery services.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted, there are growing needs for evolved digital care models and advanced data analysis," Goyal says. "The health care of the future is dependent on developing new capabilities in machine learning, home hospital models, remote diagnostics, on-demand testing, real-time lab results and more. Through broad internal and external collaboration, the Mayo Clinic Platform is making those capabilities possible."

Recently, Mayo Clinic announced a new venture known as Safe Health Systems Inc., that will use a propriety technology platform, SAFE, to improve access to efficient, affordable treatment for common medical conditions. The initial focus includes enabling testing for COVID-19 and common ailments by linking patients, clinicians and test providers via HealthCheck, an advanced smartphone and desktop application running on SAFE.

The Mayo Clinic Platform also celebrated a significant achievement earlier this fall when its Clinical Data Analytics Platform completed the de-identification of structured portions of 10 million Mayo Clinic patient records, along with 2.5 million unstructured portions. The initiative aims to accelerate medical research by using advanced analytics to extract knowledge from de-identified patient data.
