Miami resident Yadira Zepeda will never forget the day she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. It came with bitter finality: she had advanced disease, no treatment could cure her and her local physician said she probably had 2-4 months left to live.

Instead of accepting that grim diagnosis, Yadira went to Mayo Clinic, driving north six hours to a new campus in Jacksonville, Florida for a second opinion.

That was 26 years ago, in 1990.

Thanks to Mayo Clinic's specialized cancer care, Yadira and her family, which now includes four children and six grandchildren, have had countless moments and memories they never expected.
