MEDIA ADVISORY: Experts Available To Comment On Proposed Soft Drink Ban
Mayo Clinic obesity experts are available to comment on the proposal to ban super-sized soft drinks in New York City.
- Michael Jensen, M.D., endocrinologist and obesity researcher – who says:
“Sweetened soft drinks, especially in excess, are essentially empty calories. There’s no nutritional benefit except if you need a lot of easily consumable energy, which is uncommon except for athletes. You can obtain much more nutritional benefit from water and a piece of fruit. Excess consumption of sweetened soft drinks is one of many contributors to obesity.” - James Levine, M.D., Ph.D., endocrinologist and obesity researcher.
- Donald Hensrud, M.D., endocrinologist and director, Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program.
