A sudden increase in the number of children experiencing severe hepatitis has caught the attention of national health experts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently issued an alert to healthcare providers about pediatric patients suffering from significant liver injury who also tested positive for adenovirus. What are the symptoms? What can cause hepatitis? And when should parents be concerned? Two Mayo Clinic experts, Dr. Sara Hassan, a pediatric transplant hepatologist with the Mayo Clinic Children's Center and Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse, a pediatric infectious disease expert, answered journalists' questions about these unusual cases of hepatitis in kids.
