e-Patient Dave/Bionic Eye: Mayo Clinic Radio

April 13, 2015

In the past, in even the best of doctor-patient relationships, it was usually the doctor who made the final decision about treatment. Now that's changing. On this week's program, we explore "participatory medicine" with patient-engagement advocate Dave deBronkhart, Jr., better known to his blog followers as e-Patient Dave. Also on the program, Mayo Clinic ophthalmologist Dr. Raymond Iezzi, Jr., talks about the bionic eye, an implant that brings sight to people with serious vision impairment.

Here's the podcast: MayoClinicRadio PODCAST April 11, 2015

Mayo mailed out separate forms and paperwork for both of my children. I was excited until I read it was only the Olmsted County schools. We live in Winona County. Is there a way to mark in our children's records what school they attend so that Mayo is not mailing out to those not in the locations of such clinics? Or in the future, email the forms to the parents instead of the paper copies?

COMMENT

This is a great program; I'm so glad it exists. It's a very convenient way to get all three of my kids vaccinated without having to make appointments or take them out of school.

COMMENT

I think this is a fantastic program and I'm sure will help to increase the number of children who receive flu vaccinations this year! I too received a letter with information only to find my child's school not listed- Kasson Mantorville. I had assumed since the Kasson Clinic is right there- it would have been included. If it was only for Olmsted County- why send letters outside of the county?

Thank you for your comment. We sincerely apologize for the confusion. All non-Olmsted counties should have been removed. We will make sure to clarify this for future processes. We will also add a comment to the letter making sure it is clear if you received the letter in error that you can disregard. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Could you clarify for me, Pine Island Elementary is in Olmsted Cnty and was listed but since the High School is in Goodhue Cnty and wasn't listed then flu vaccination is not available for my child in High School, correct?

Yes, that is correct.

So my family member goes to Chatfield High School that is in Olmstead county. Would he be eligible even though we live in Fillmore county?

COMMENT

John Marshall's flu shot is scheduled for a day when there is no school at JM.

Please consider including communities just outside Olmsted county in the future! St. Charles is SO close!

Hi, we worked with the public schools to arrange for a different date since that decision to close school was recent. We just had confirmation John Marshall's date will be on October 11 in the AM. All parents who signed up their teens for vaccines that day will be notified. Thank you.

Chatfield is being considered for a future addition.

I too live in Winona Co and received a letter. I was really disappointed when I learned that the reason I received a letter was because the town that I live in sits on the Olmsted/Winona Co line. Would Mayo ever consider expanding this schools outside of Olmsted Co? Some counties don't have the resources or the money to go the schools. It sure would be nice if Mayo/Olmsted Co would help the other out.

Hey Tim, I was just trying to sign up my boys for Chatfield and Chatfield isn't even listed, however I got a letter in the mail regarding Mayo flu shots at school….????

COMMENT

If we received a letter and the school our child attends is not on the list, are we still able to call FAMMED and receive a vaccine? As others have commented it was a bit disappointing to receive a letter and not be eligible.

Thank you so much for working with the community on this endeavor! I think this is a wonderful example of government, private, and non-profit groups working together to find a solution to a problem. It's a win-win for everyone involved as it's convenient, reliable, keeps people healthy and improves our community. Thank you for this amazing program!
